Rock Around The Clock Bill Haley Cinema Poster
Scarce UK Quad linen-backed cinema poster for the important Rock 'n' Roll film "Rock Around The Clock" (1956) this being for the first re-release of the film c' 1964-66.
Starring Bill Haley & The Comets, "Rock Around The Clock" was designed to exploit teenage fascination with the new music form of Rock 'n' Roll. Altough Elvis Presley was later to assume the mantle of the figurehead for the art form, Bill Haley was at the vanguard to begin with, his single "Shake Rattle & Roll" being a hit in 1954. It was perhaps understandable that as Rock 'n' Roll was associated with teenage rebellion, so
a number of British cinemas witnessed riots when this film first played.
We believe this poster to be for the first re-release of the film. The very first release Quad poster is shown for reference. Although the re-release poster carries a similar image of a sax player & a photo of Haley's face, the Pop-Art graphics, "flower-power" colours & terminology ie, "Rave", all hint of a 1960's vibe. This is borne out by the Columbia logo to the centre of the lower rim which was not in use till 1964.
Poster once folded but now backed. Prior to backing the poster had some foldline wear, surface scuffs & pin-holes to corners. The restorer has made no attempt to over-paint or touch-in so the poster remains in authentic & original condition.
A superb poster with important musical herritage which is not commonly seen in the market. For an idea of relative value an inferior condition poster like this sold at Heritage Auctions in the US for $720 in May 2021.
