Thames Lightermen Bignell Photo 1963

A large original b/w silver print photograph (16"x 19 1/2") entitled "Apprentice Lightermen" by the London photographer John Bignell, the photo signed by Bignell & dated "1963" (printed later).

The photo depicts two apprentice Lightermen on the Thames with St. Paul's Cathedral in the background (Lightermen worked on barges carrying goods & people across the Thames - these apprentices must have been among the last to have studied this craft). One of the Lightermen boasts a great period "Teddy Boy" haircut. Photo currently mounted on black paper but it will be detached from this for posting. John Bignell was active during the 1950's-80's & principally a street photographer. A book of his photos entitled "Chelsea Photographer" was published in 1983.

This photo was acquired at the Sotheby's auction of Photographs, 2nd May 1997 & was part of Lot #487.
