U2 Aylesbury Friars Gig Flyer 1980

An early piece of U2 gig memorabilia, this being a double-sided Friars Aylesbury gig flyer (8"x 13") advertising the debut Friars appearance of Rory Gallagher on 24th Sept 1980. Although the advertised support band is shown as Rage, they were replaced by the little-known Irish combo, U2!

In the past U2 were supposed to have played at Bogarts, Birmingham on the 24th Sept but at some point they switched to the Friars gig. Although not featured on the pre-gig flyers/posters, U2 were documented in the local newspaper, The Bucks Herald. This was published on Thursday's & on Thurs 18th Sept 1980, the newspaper carried an advert with the revised support line-up (see below). The Friars website also details U2's appearance (https://www.aylesburyfriars.co.uk/gallagher80.html) & states that they were paid £25! Friars was a significantly larger venue than Bogarts, so it is likely that U2 were easily persuaded by both a better fee & the chance to rub shoulders with Irish rock royalty (Rory Gallagher) too.

Flyer in excellent condition. A really interesting & obscure early piece of U2 memorabilia.
