Aubrey Beardsley Scandecor Poster 1973

Original 1973 Aubrey Beardsley "Black Cape" Scandecor commercial poster (27"x 39").

Following a V&A retrospective exhibition of Beardsley's Art-Nouveau artwork in 1966, Beardsley's new-found popularity resulted in commercial releases of his designs like this by Scandecor in 1973 (a staple of student bedsits etc). The V&A commented specifically about the "Black Cape": "Created in 1894 to accompany the eponymous work by Oscar Wilde, this beguiling block print depicts Salome in profile, dressed in an extravagant cape and flowing skirt with stylised floral motifs". The emerging counter-culture movement was clearly influenced by Beardsley's work, his designs being embraced by various 1960's-70's Underground artists.

Although Beardsley's "Black Cape" has been extensively repo'd, this particular poster printed on this distinctive brown paper, is an original from the heady days of Beardsley's counter-culture re-birth.

Poster unfolded & remains in very good condition (slight fraying to upper left rim) & will be sent rolled in a tube. A stylish piece of wall art that has connections with both the original 19th century Art-Nouveau movement & the counter-culture scene of the late 1960's-early 1970's.
